Body Armour- Guidance

Guidance on Choosing your Personal Body Armour

Body Armour contains two components; the cover and the Protective Armour.  Consideration needs to be given separately to both functionality and the threats likely to be encountered.  Poor selection of body armour can put your life at risk.

Choosing the Cover

When choosing a cover the natures of duties that you are likely to be employed in often dictate whether an overt or covert body armour is required.  Note that even the overt cover is easy to conceal under a jacket.  It has the added advantage of facilitating ballistic plates, which can protect against 5.56mm and 7.62mm ammunition.  In the photograph below the subject is wearing overt body armour with ballistic plates inserted.

Note that covers can be washed as a normal garment. Always read the washing instructions provided.

Choosing the Protection

When choosing protection you must consider the threats likely to be encountered during the course of your duties.  Personnel employed as a doorman are more likely to be subject of a knife attack rather than a gun attack, where only anti-stab protection would be necessary.  This is a choice for the individual.

Advice on Measuring For Anti-Stab Armour

ALL MEASUREMENTS TAKEN IN INCHES.  AFTER PURCHASE A CUSTOMER SERVICES ADVISOR WILL CONTACT YOU TO CONFIRM ALL MEASUREMENTS.

Belt to belt - Measure approximately 2 inches to the side of your neck.  This measurement is straight over the shoulder from the top of your belt at the rear to the belt at your front.  Stand up straight with relaxed shoulders for this measurement.  If possible use an assistant to ensure accuracy.

Stomach standing – Ensure that you are standing in a relaxed, upright posture.

Stomach seated – Ensure that you are sitting in a relaxed upright posture.  Take the largest measurement.

Sternum to belt Standing – This the point where the collar bones meet just below the Adam’s Apple.

Sternum to belt Seated – This the point where the collar bones meet just below the Adam’s Apple.

Nape to belt standing – The nape is the highest protruding back bone found just under the hairline when you put your neck forward.  Take the measurement standing upright.

Between arms – Put your hands together and hold your arms directly out in front of you.  Have your assistant measure the distance between the arms across your chest.
